Get up early so you have time to enjoy breakfast, which will give you energy for the hike. Jump on the morning bus to Bakka, walk towards Tufte and start your ascent at around 9:00. The record for the ascent to Rimstigen is 28 minutes, but you don’t need to hurry. However, you should bear in mind that the bus back to Flåm or Aurland departs in the early afternoon.
The steep path to Rimstigen, which takes you up to 725 metres above sea level, is considered demanding and is therefore recommended for people in good physical shape. The path is around 3 km Be prepared for some exposed sections with sheer drops. But there are wonderful views, virtually from the start of the path. Despite being quite tough, it is a very rewarding hike, with the most stunning views of the Nærøyfjord from the summit! Allow around 3 hours for the round trip.
Even though the season for hiking to Rimstigen starts in June, there may be some mud on the trail from the melting snow. Since this area is very prone to avalanches during the winter, you may see some fallen rocks scattered around. The season usually ends in October. No matter when you decide to walk up to Rimstigen, always dress according to the weather and be aware that the conditions in the mountains can quickly change.
Another option is to leave the bus at Langhuso between Flåm and Gudvangen and walk along the old road down the picturesque valley to Undredal. The old road is approximately 7 km long and is perfect for a family adventure. It is marked with red T signs and starts on the left-hand side of the road. At the end of the walk you will be rewarded with a great view of the charming village and the stunning Aurlandsfjord.
Along the way you’ll likely meet some of the four-legged residents of Undredal: goats. Undredal is famous for its goat cheese, and you’ll pass mountain farms that produce cheese in the summer. Make sure you sample some cheese when you reach the village.
From Undredal you can take the Fjord Cruise Nærøyfjord back to either Aurland or Flåm. You’ll need to book ticket at least 15 minutes before departure.
Instead of walking back down the steep trail from Rimstigen to Bakka, after reaching the top you can decide to continue your hike along the Rimstigfjellet to Breiskrednosi, reaching 1.189 metres above sea level. This hike is very demanding, but also considered a hidden gem that offers the most iconic view of the Nærøyfjord.
From here, continue down to Dyrdal, where you can catch the fully electric boat M/S Legacy of The Fjords, which will take you back to Aurland or Flåm. If you decide to go for this option, don’t lose track of time, as the boat departs from Dyrdal at 18:15* and there are no other transport options. Once you’re on board the ferry, you can relax, while enjoying the amazing fjord landscape around you.
NB! This is a demanding hike in both length and altitude. You need to be in good physical condition and used to walking on uneven trails and steep terrain. Make sure to bring a good map or a GPS, as most of the path is not marked or signposted.
*This has to be pre-booked at least 15 minutes before departure.
